Safecity: Promoting women safety through crowd-mapping
ICONOGRAPHY | CAMPAIGN COLLATERALS | WOMEN EMPOWERMENT
The project brief was to design a set of icons that visualizes the different kinds of sexual harassment and abuse that women in India encounter. In addition, I designed other collaterals like posters, standee graphics, digital posters to broadcast the campaign in public spaces. This was a pro-bono project done for Safecity.

DURATION: 2 Weeks
TOOLS: Illustrator
MY ROLE: Iconography, Designing digital & print campaign materials
Client Background
Safecity is a platform that crowdsources personal stories of sexual harassment and abuse in public spaces. This data which maybe anonymous, gets aggregated as hot spots on a map indicating trends at a local level.
The idea is to make this data useful for individuals, local communities and local administration to identify factors that causes behavior that leads to violence and work on strategies for solutions. (Source)
Design Considerations
Broad context or a zoomed in detail: What to focus on, the assault or the whole scenarios? What would provide more context and be easily relatable?
How much to include? Icons have to be clear and narrative with minimum elements possible. What to include and how much to leave out?

Design Adaptation
The earlier set was developed keeping in mind a particular campaign. I attempted to develop another variation of the same set so that it can more readily be used in communication material and digital mediums.
My first attempt to re-design the set wasn't very successful. The additional colors made the icons look very playful instead of communicating the gravity of the issue these icons represented.
For the final set, I continued to use the main brand colors. I added another color to highlight the featured sexual assault more visibly upfront. This allowed me to communicate a broader context as well as highlight the core action being communicated.
